Today's Tips Go Back
I Wish You Would Come to See Me

One question that many people go back and forth on is who should be the one to break the ice, the old or new neighbor. Many people believe that part of the responsibility of an already moved-in neighbor, is to introduce themselves and welcome the new neighbor to the neighborhood. These people are right. Despite how awkward you may feel, there are some things that you can do to help break the ice.

Perhaps one of the most important things to do when you are expecting a new neighbor, is to make your house look as attractive as possible, because the way your house looks is far more telling of your personality than even a personal introduction of yourself from friends.

A charming looking house says that charming people live in it. And if you are an ardent gardener, all the better. Perhaps one of the most effective ways of making your house look attractive is by caring for a lovely garden.

Another way of making friends with your neighbor is by bringing over your puppy, being sure not to let it dig a hole in their yard, or chew their fence! The part you must leave to fate is hoping that you will find your neighbors congenial, and that they feel the same way.

How to Make the First Visit:

In large cities, neighbors very rarely ever call on one another. In small neighborhoods, however, it is considered unfriendly to not call upon them. The older residents should always call upon the newer. The person who is considered to be the most socially prominent should be the one to go first. The younger or less prominent one should at least be invited to call on the new neighbor, and the younger one should not refuse but do promptly.

Otherwise, two ladies of the same age or position should say, “I wish you would come to see me.” To which the other replies, “I would love to.” Or one usually says, “I should like to come to see you.” And the other replies, “I do hope you will.”
