Preparing Your Household Inventory
When there is no proof of ownership on stolen property, compensation is very difficult. That is why it is so important to prepare a detailed inventory of all your personal property.
q Include the name and address of the appraiser on all appraisals.
q When available, include the serial number on valuable property.
q Hold on to receipts and prepare a description of the item on the receipt.
q It is wise to video your home and all the property inside. Start from one corner of each room, and work your way out to make sure you cover everything.
q Be sure to include closets, attic, and basement in your video.
q Remember to include sporting goods materials.
q Have a detailed record of jewelry, antiques, silver, and major appliances as well.
q Keep your inventory up-to-date. Add new items to your list as you purchase them.
